Carlisle project promotes Hadrian’s Wall link
Construction has started on the Roman Gateway visitor attraction project in Carlisle aimed at establishing the city as the tourist entrance to Hadrian's Wall.
The project, design by Warrington-based landscape design practice, TEP, includes major investment in Tullie House Museum to create a new Roman Gallery, together with public realm enhancements within the historic quarter of the city centre and Bitts Park.
Carlisle City Council appointed TEP in summer 2010 to prepare public realm and interpretation designs as part of the project. TEP worked with artist and designer, Broadbent, to develop interpretation and way-finding material linking Hadrian's Wall Path to the city centre.
Works include resurfacing pavements, new entrances to Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, new street furniture, bespoke way-marking beacons, information boards and surfacing interpretation.
The work is due for completion in spring 2011.
