Vacant Penkford School to be destroyed

A St Helens Council application has been recommended for approval and is awaiting a decision before the educational facility can be razed.

The single-story building, on the outskirts of Newton-le-Willows, has been left unused and has fallen into disrepair.

All the buildings on the site would be demolished, while the foundations, car parks, and service roads would remain.

The school sits off the corner of Wharf Road and Common Road.

Asbestos is present in the building, but demolition is likely to go ahead with the help of a specialist.

In October 2022, children were moved from Penkford to Willow Bank School off Mill Lane.

The council will meet on 3 September to decide on the application.

If successful, demolition would begin towards the end of September.

Sutcliffe are a consultant on the demolition.

To find the application, use the reference number P/2024/0356/DEMPA in St Helens’ planning portal.
