Supermarket and 147 homes given green light in Wythenshawe
A Lidl supermarket in Baguley and a 147-home development next to Manchester Enterprise Academy have been given the go-ahead by Wythenshawe’s area committee.
The housing scheme, designed by architect AEW, includes 109 houses and 38 apartments on an 8.9-acre site behind Manchester Enterprise Academy, which is currently used as a playing field.
Three vacant properties on Greenwood Road and Gladeside Road will be demolished to make way for the project, which will be developed by Wythenshawe Community Housing Group.
The scheme is understood to be the largest by number of homes that WCHG has ever put forward.
Planning officers said: “The new homes will respond directly to a local identified need and improve the housing offer for local people, helping to promote a strong and sustainable local community.”
AEW director Colin Savage added: “We are proud to have worked closely with WCHG to achieve approval of this exciting scheme which will provide 147 high quality homes for the community of Wythenshawe.”
Also approved at the committee on 23 November was a 24,000 sq ft Lidl store next to Tesco Extra in Baguley.
The supermarket will include 14,300 sq ft of sales space alongside 141 car parking spaces. The existing site entrance off Timpson Road will be retained and reconfigured, while pedestrian access will be provided from Altrincham Road and Southmoor Road.
Both existing office buildings on the site, Southmoor House and Shepherd House, will be demolished to make way for the supermarket.
The project has been designed by Space Architects, with Rapleys as planner.
Planning officers said: “The proposals are considered to bring back into full productive use a prominently located site that would generate employment opportunities for local residents.”
