Story Homes overturns village project on appeal
Planning and design consultancy Barton Willmore has secured planning permission at appeal for a new housing development in the village of Lazonby, near Penrith in Cumbria, on behalf of Story Homes.
The proposal for 48 new homes, including 14 affordable properties, will increase the number of homes in the village by 12%.
The application to Eden Council was refused planning permission in July 2013 on the grounds that the size and scale of the development would be harmful to the character and appearance of the village of Lazonby.
However, the Planning Inspectorate ruled that the proposals counted as a small-scale scheme, and that Barton Willmore's design complemented the historical character of the existing buildings.
Dan Mitchell, partner at Barton Willmore, said: "There is a recognised need for new homes in the district, including the new affordable homes that this development will provide.
"We sought to reflect the existing character of the village, including using the red sandstone that characterises much of the local architecture, to provide a sustainable and attractive extension to Lazonby."
