SI Sealy wins Co-op HQ contract

Stockport-based building services consulting engineers SI Sealy has been appointed by Rotary North West as detailed engineering designers of The Co-operative Group's new headquarters building in Manchester.

The £100m building will include 320,000 sq ft of open plan office space over 16 storeys and is located at the city's Northern Gateway and bounded by Miller Street and Corporation Street.

SI Sealy has been recruited to help achieve an 'outstanding' BREEAM sustainable energy rating for the building.

Tony Grindrod, construction manager for BAM, the main contractors for the project, said: "The Co-operative Group's desire for a Carbon Negative building made the appointment of a strong and proactive mechanical and electrical contracting team crucial."

David Stafford, SI Sealy director, added: "As a prestigious project, detailed design work for the Co-op project will be undertaken through Spectrum Consulting, our Joint Venture with Hannan Associates and Gill Massey initially formed to deliver major overseas projects. Spectrum has over 100 full time MEP engineers, enabling us to bid for major projects worldwide such as the Co-op project."

The Co-operative and BAM Construction are working with Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Greater Manchester Employers Coalition and Jobcentre Plus with the aim of ensuring that 8% of the construction workforce are apprentices.

Construction of the 16-storey office building started in July and is scheduled to be completed by August 2012.
