Recruitment agency says look to energy sector for jobs

Construction workers and surveyors who have been made redundant during the recession should look for work in the cash-rich nuclear sector, according to Wirral-based Scantec Personnel.

Adam Spelman, head of Scantec's nuclear division, said the next generation of nuclear power plants will require thousands of engineers, skilled tradesmen and surveyors.

He said: "The recession is wreaking havoc with the jobs market. So the key phrase we are repeating to workers is 'transferable skills'. That is what employers are looking for. Real long term, well-paid opportunities exist in the nuclear industry as well as the oil and gas and the bio mass sector.

"It is important to point out that these sectors are willing to train up staff who have core skills. It is these sectors that workers in the decimated motor industry, construction trade need to look. The advice to workers is talk to recruitment specialists, send in your CV and see how you can pick up work."

Four potential sites for new nuclear power stations were unveiled in January by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. Sellafield in Cumbria, Bradwell in Essex, Oldbury in Gloucestershire and Wylfa in Anglesey will all go forward for further consideration as candidates to become new nuclear plants.

Gordon Brown revealed that up to 9,000 jobs could be created to build each of the power stations, as well as another 1,000 once the plants were up and running.
