Preston halls finished in eight months
An £8m student accommodation development in Preston has been handed over by contractor Marcus Worthington & Co and Croft Goode Architects for Cosmopolitan Student Homes.
The six-storey building in Walker Street contains 169 bedrooms in 36 apartments.
David Croft, director of Croft Goode Architects, said: "This is a bold and vibrant building that revitalises a derelict site that was ready for development for a number of years. Not only does it significantly enhance the look of the area, it provides desirable, sustainable and secure student living just a stone's throw from the university."
The building, off the Fylde Road roundabout near the University of Central Lancashire's main campus, gained Secured by Design accreditation for crime prevention measures.
The scheme was built in eight months. Chris Pope, senior quantity surveyor at Marcus Worthington & Co, said: "The Walker Street development has been a challenging build, both commercially and in its construction. Compounded by the exceptionally short programme, it has required our expertise in this sector to deliver this building on time and within budget. We are delighted to have been able to assist Cosmopolitan Student Homes in expanding their portfolio in Preston."
The site was formerly occupied by a vehicle repair garage and car wash which was demolished a number of years ago.
Finished in 8 months, but shouldn’t those 8 months have concluded with the start of the new academic year? Also, aren’t Cosmopolitan in some sort of financial trouble – I hope they’ve paid their bills on this one!
