Place event: Elder Care
Issues surrounding the housing market for the ageing population will be the subject of a full-day conference on 8 December in Manchester organised by Place North West.
Elder Care: Housing the Ageing Population, in association with Pozzoni , will address key topics across the various types of property in the sector: nursing homes, supported living care homes and independent living / sheltered accommodation.
Addressing the event will be several keynote speakers with insight into the elder care market, including:
- Nigel Ingram, director of development and asset management, Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust
- Martin Stevenson, director of older people's services, Harvest Housing Group
- Alan Firth, executive chairman, Meridian Healthcare
- Guy Cresswell, director of housing services, Great Places Housing
As well as these presentations, there will be the chance to explore themes in greater detail in breakout roundtable discussions on funding, planning, design and strategy.
The population of the UK is rapidly ageing, over the last 27 years the percentage of the population aged 65 and over increased by 1.7 million people. The fastest population increase has been in the number of those aged 85 and over. In 1984, there were around 660,000 people in this group, since then the numbers have more than doubled, reaching 1.4 million in 2009. By 2034 the number of people aged 85 and over is projected to be 2.5 times larger than in 2009, reaching 3.5 million and accounting for 5% of the total population.
The United Kingdom is starting to face the challenge of how to provide expensive specialist care and lifestyle support to its elder population. The residential care market is estimated to be worth £23bn with demand for private sector providers projected to increase, as the public sector scales down its provisions, from capacity for 382,000 individuals in 2010 to 399,000 in 2015 and 420,000 by 2020.
Projections suggest that by 2031, older people will account for 53% of the increase in the total number of households in the UK, resulting in 3.3 million more, older households than there are today, of which 2.2 million will be households of one person an increase of 108,666 new one person households over the age of 60+ each year.
his Elder Care conference will explore the opportunities and challenges these demographic and social changes present to the property and construction industry and will provide in-depth analysis of the market conditions and opportunities.
