Orbit to replace fire-destroyed self-storage in Stockport

Plans for a 140,000 sq ft new-build unit have been submitted to the local council 12 months on from a blaze that reduced the previous building to ashes.

The Earl Road site in Cheadle was formerly occupied by an Armadillo self-storage facility, which was destroyed in a fire in February 2022. The remains of the damaged building were deemed unsafe and then knocked down.

Orbit’s replacement self-storage unit would be two storeys taller and occupy a smaller footprint than the previous facility.

As a result, part of the 4.3-acre site will remain clear and could provide the opportunity for separate development proposals in the future.

Maddox Planning and Emerson Group are advising Orbit on the plans.

To learn more about the proposals, search for reference number DC/087714 on Stockport Council’s planning portal.

The site is located opposite the former BASF head office. The former BASF site is to be redeveloped into a 135,000 sq ft office development by PIN Property.
