Nikal targets summer start on £70m Altair

The first residential phase of Nikal’s £70m Altair scheme in Altrincham has been granted planning permission by Trafford Council.

Construction of the 4.5-acre mixed-use scheme along Moss Lane and Oakfield Road will start this summer, with completion of the first phase anticipated in December 2017.

Eric Wright Construction will start site clearance works to make way for the construction of 59 apartments plus ground floor retail leisure units.

The apartments will be delivered by Hillcrest Homes, Nikal’s homebuilding company, and will be made up of 36 one-bedroom and 23 two-bedroom apartments designed by Stephenson Studio.

Apartments will be released for off plan sale in the summer.

Nikal’s phase one plans for Altair also include a new entrance for Altrincham Ice Rink and a landscaped pedestrianised area with space for outside seating and pavement cafés.

Nikal was granted outline planning permission for Altair site in January 2014. The scheme next to the new transport interchange will include a 43,000 sq ft leisure centre, 96,000 sq ft of retail and restaurants, coffee shops and cafes, a 7,400 sq ft bowling alley, 150 apartments and townhouses, and 35,000 sq ft of office space and a car park.

Detailed planning applications for the rest of the scheme are due to be submitted later this year.

Planning consent for a project twice the size was granted in 2008. Nikal subsequently bought out the interest of joint venture partner David McLean following its collapse into administration as the financial crisis hit.

Altair has been developed by Nikal in partnership with Trafford Council and Altrincham Forward.

Nick Payne, managing director of Nikal, said: “Altair is such an exciting new addition to our thriving modern market town; a premier town centre living quarter and a real community with high quality but affordable homes where values will appreciate. The offering rivals the most fashionable new areas of Manchester, such as Spinningfields and the Northern Quarter. We’re providing stylish and sophisticated apartment living with a fantastic range of desirable amenities and attractions right on the doorstep, plus an excellent choice of transport links that places the whole of the North West within easy reach.”
