Wingates tipped for 400,000 sq ft of warehouses

Panattoni UK, part of logistics developer Panattoni Europe, wants to build three units at the industrial estate in Bolton.

Consultancy Lichfields has submitted to a hybrid planning application to the council on behalf of the developer.

The application seeks permission to build two units totalling 360,000 sq ft off Great Bank Road in Wingates Industrial Estate, and either a potential 53,000 sq ft third warehouse or additional car parking.

The units were designed by AEW Architects.

An international distribution firm has already been lined up for the largest unit, at 283,000 sq ft, according to Panattoni UK.

A three-storey office building would also be built under the plans.

The Great Bank Road site, totalling 24 acres, was previously home to Bernstein’s Kitchen Factory, which was demolished in 2011 after a fire.

Matt Grant, senior planner at Lichfields, said: “This project has the potential to deliver up to 420,000 sq ft of employment space and create more than 600 jobs for the area.

“Approval of this scheme would deliver significant economic benefits and job creation for Bolton, and [the council’ should given substantial weight to the economic and social benefit in considering the proposals.”

The site was initially developed in the late 1970s as a single warehouse for the manufacturing and distribution of car parts.
