TIF triumph expected Monday

Transport secretary Ruth Kelly is due to announce that Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive's bid for £3bn of Transport Innovation Funds has been successful.

Kelly will make the announcement in the House of Commons at 3.30pm and a simultaneous press conference is being called at Rochdale Town Hall to outline details of the package.

Speculation from those close to the bid suggests GMPTE will be awarded the entire £3bn pot available to upgrade the transport system for the area and become the first city outside London to introduce congestion charging.

The bid contains proposals for major upgrades and increased capacity on bus and train routes as well as the peak time road pricing system.
