Stockport Interchange moves to next phase

The mixed-use project has secured unanimous backing from Stockport Council’s planning committee with a number of major contractors expressing an interest in delivering the scheme.

Stockport Council’s proposals for the site feature a 196-home apartment block, a transport interchange covered with a green roof, and two acres of public realm opening up on to the river Mersey, alongside improved connectivity to the town’s railway station.

The plans also factor in a route for the Metrolink’s potential arrival to the town, with one of the visualisations showing tram lines and platforms alongside the viaduct.

The residential block, including 126 two-bed apartments and 70 one-bed apartments, is expected to cost around £39m to build. A joint venture between the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the council will develop the block and will rent the apartments privately for a minimum of five years following its completion.

Stockport Council is understood to be procuring the scheme via the Pagabo major construction works framework, covering projects worth more than £50m.

The eight contractors on the framework in the North are Galliford Try; Interserve; ISG; Laing O’Rourke; Morgan Sindall; Sir Robert McAlpine; Vinci; and Willmott Dixon. A number of these are understood to have expressed their interest in delivering the scheme.

The council has already secured £41.7m of Growth Fund money to help to deliver the project, and it has already received a grant of £2.6m from the Government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund to help support the project’s delivery. BDP is lead designer on the project, providing architecture, landscape design and lighting design. WSP is lead consultant.

Still think the placement of the tower is crap, it’s bang on to remove so much light from the site throughout the day. The renders are incredibly misleading, there is no period of the year where the sun would cause shadows to fall as per the render – the building is to the south of the site, as is the sun traditionally, believe it or not.

On the shortest day, the sun will be more or less entirely blocked by the tower for the full length of the day… Shame about the TGV model they used for the train as well, unless we’re getting TGV stockport now?

But never the less glad to see this has been approved. The landscape plans look specially good.

It seems that the sun is coming from the north now

That looks like a hugely ambitious project, transport hub combined with chavasse park. Let’s hope it is pulled off and not value-engineered down..

Looking forward to seeing it built keep it up Stockport

All this work and no shops open by the time this is completed. Wrong priorities as always with SMBC

I like the idea if developing the station it’s tired and old and long overdue. However the the tower block isn’t needed. Why do we need flats in the town centre? And why so high? I also wonder Bout the practicality of the pathways on the green roof that don’t lead anywhere? They may look nice in the drawing but in reality they could be dark and perfect for crime.

Please ditch the sticking-up bedhead edifice attached to the footbridge

Stockport won the carbuncle award last year for the incredibly ugly ‘Red Rock’ development. It seems the Council is determined to win the award a second time. Yes Stockport needs a new transport interchange(bus station), it does NOT need another ugly eyesore in the form of a huge out of keeping residential block that will be totally out of scale with the rest of the Town Centre and the iconic railway viaduct. I find it incomprehensible that any elected representatives could agree to such an unnecessary addition to a town that is already burdened with more than its fair share of architectural eyesores..

I think the tower is far too high. It will spoil the view of the viaduct as well as blocking sunshine.

Put the tower on the north side of the interchange and make it taller and narrower.
