Science museum tenders £4.8m revamp

Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry is inviting contractors to bid for the refurbishment and remodelling of its Grade II listed Lower Byrom Street Building.

Drivers Jonas is retained by the museum to advise on the work, which is aimed at making the former railway station more fit for purpose as a visitor attraction.

The museum will remain open and operational during the work. Key components include new entrances, reshaping the existing atrium spaces, internal ramps and stairwells, extending exhibition space, relocating the education suite and new flexible conference and banqueting area.

The contract will take 10 months to complete. A shortlist is due to be drawn up in August.
