Popular student haunt changes hands

Hydes Brewery has paid Mitchells & Butlers £1.5m to buy the Queen of Hearts pub in Fallowfield, Manchester.

The Queen of Hearts and Cheshire Cat are popular watering holes for the large student population of Fallowfield – the main campus of Manchester University is directly opposite the site on Wilmslow Road.

The properties were originally a school and church hall that formed part of the Holy Innocents Church located behind the pub and bar.

The site also features the derelict former Carroll's Hotel and a vacant 0.25 acre plot that could be suitable for redevelopment subject to planning permission being granted.

Colin Siebert, director of licensed and leisure space at the Manchester office of Colliers International, advised M&B. He said: "Despite the well-publicised difficulties in the pub industry this is the fourteenth pub in the North West we have sold this year with another 25 in legal hands."
