North West boasts more Green Flag quality parks than London

Green Flag awards were given to 195 parks in the North West for being well maintained and welcoming today, more than London which was awarded 151.

The South East had the next highest number with 75 but the rest of the regions recorded only around 50 each.

The awards, run by the Civic Trust on behalf of the Government, judge parks against stringent assessment criteria based on environment, maintenance and involvement of the local community.

The region's winners will celebrate their achievements and collect their awards at a ceremony in Liverpool on Thursday 24 July.

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Baroness Andrews, who will be attending the awards ceremony, said: "The North West's parks show just how important green spaces can be for everyone as centrepoints of the community."
