Man Utd and Co-op among top CRC performers
The Environment Agency has published the first Performance League Table ranking participants in the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme.
Participants were scored against three weighted metrics: early action, absolute, and growth. Among the notable North West entries were:
- National Museums Liverpool and Red Football (Manchester United FC) among the 22 organisations in joint 1st place.
- Preston City Council at 41
- Co-operative Group at joint =44
- Manchester Metropolitan University at 59
- United Utilities =69
- Manchester City Council 88
- Liverpool City Council =109
- University of Manchester =193
- Liverpool John Moores University =258
- Peel Holdings =347
- University of Liverpool and ACC Liverpool =381
- Manchester Airports Group =611
- Matalan =649
- N Brown Group =776
- Opal Property Group =911
- Emerson Group =942
- Sefton Council and Warrington Council =1301 (joint bottom)
However, the results are far from clear cut. Bill Chandler, legal director of business services at Hill Dickinson, said: "Beware however that this first league table is potentially misleading since it is based entirely on 'early action', which basically comprises being certified under one of the seven accredited carbon management schemes (such as Carbon Trust), and measuring electricity and gas supplies through voluntarily installed automatic meter reading devices, dynamic un-metered supply and daily read gas meters.
"The actual level of emissions – and any reductions in emissions – are not factored in for the first year, so the league table does not indicate who is actually the greenest, although one would anticipate that the organisations who have taken 'early action' are perhaps also those most likely to take serious action to improve their environmental performance and reduce emissions going forward. From next year, the table will reflect actual emissions and percentage change and so will be much more meaningful."
