The discount supermarket chain wants to redevelop the site of the former Fir Tree pub on Gorton Road.
Lidl is planning to build a 20,000 sq ft store on the 1.3-acre site, which is vacant following the demolition of the pub and a clutch of other buildings.
The supermarket chain owns the site and began pre-application discussions with Stockport Council in January 2020.
As Lidl’s retained planning consultant, Rapleys is advising the company on its Reddish proposals.
The Reddish project is part of a £1.3bn investment as Lidl bids to open its 1,000th UK store by 2023.
Lidl invested £1.5bn in its UK expansion drive between 2017 and 2019 and is the process of delivering around 60 new stores across the UK.
Research from Kantar Worldpanel in October 2020 identified Lidl had a 6.1% share in the grocery market.
Other Lidl projects in the North West include the under-construction store at Mocha Parade in Salford, a store at Caldy Valley Retail Park in Great Boughton, which is out for consultation, and another in Fallowfield.
Meanwhile, plans for stores in Wavertree and within Salboy’s Castle Irwell development in Salford hit the buffers. In Wavertree Lidl withdrew its application for a store on Church Road North after the existing building on the site, Abbey Cinema, was granted listed status.
At Castle Irwell, Salford City Council rejected the proposals due to concerns they would “fail to contribute positively towards local identity and distinctiveness”.
