Investigation underway after Sonae tragedy

The Health & Safety Executive and Merseyside Police are looking into the death of two men on Tuesday at the Sonae factory in Knowsley Industrial Estate in Kirkby which produces chipboard for the construction industry.

Merseyside Police said in a statement: "Emergency services were called at about 3:45pm to the Sonae factory on Moss Lane in Knowsley Industrial Estate to a report that two men had been injured.

"Northwest Regional Ambulance Service, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Merseyside Police and the Health and Safety Executive attended the factory. The men were later declared dead at the scene.

"The area has been cordoned off and enquiries are underway into the incident."

The Liverpool Echo today reported that "workers… said they believed that the two agency workers were dragged by a conveyor belt into the workings of a huge silo."
