Housing comes forward at Ashton’s Cavendish Mill

Jigsaw Homes’ plans to build 51 homes around the mill on the Ashton Canal are set to secure consent from Tameside Council.

The housing provider has put forward proposals to develop two parcels of land around the grade two star-listed mill on Cavendish Street; these were previously used as employment land but have been vacant since the late 1990s.

The plans feature a four-storey, 32-apartment block fronting the canal, along with 12 homes on a separate parcel to the south west of the mill. A further five terraced houses and two semi-detached homes have also been put forward fronting Bentinck Street.

All of the proposed homes are to be for affordable tenures.

Tameside’s planning committee is set to give the scheme the go-ahead later this week, with officers recommending the scheme for approval. Planning permission for 50 homes on the site was granted in 2017 but this has yet to be progressed.

Approval is subject to a Section 106 agreement, which is to include a £42,000 contribution towards open space around the site, and just short of £10,000 towards highways.

Millson Associates is the architect and WSP | Indigo is the planner.
