Chinese freight firm chooses Manchester for UK base

Globelink China Logistics is to seek offices for a sales team in Manchester city centre following the takeover of local company CBI Global Freight Management.

CBI Global currently has offices in Sale at the Mirwell Business Centre and Globelink Chine has taken two suites for the freight forwarding operation on a three-year lease at the World Freight Terminal at Manchester Airport.

Nigel Sleigh, managing director of CBI Global Freight Management, said: "Make no mistake, Manchester has been chosen over London by Globelink because of the unrivalled logistical opportunities afforded by Manchester Airport."

Manchester will be the company's UK headquarters and there will also be a London branch opening in the near future with Manchester continuing to be the HQ.

CBI Global Freight Management will re-brand to Uni Logistics, a subsidiary of Globelink China Logistics Group, dealing with all aspects of international freight forwarding. This will complement other Uni Logistics' offices.

The relationship between the two companies started in 2005 and acquisition talks had been ongoing since 2009.

The move comes less than five months after Midas unveiled its China Working Links paper. Angie Robinson, chief executive of Midas, said: "China is a huge and growing world economic force and to have Globelink China Logistics choose Manchester as its UK base is a vote of confidence in our region's business and unrivalled transport links and infrastructure."
