Bouygues to close Manchester office

Bouygues UK has blamed a “challenging market” after making the decision to pull its construction business out of One Didsbury Point, Manchester.

The company is to merge both its Manchester and Birmingham operations with offices in the South West and Wales and said its existing projects will be unaffected as the office merger continues.

Projects the company is delivering in the North West include The Green Rooms, a 19-storey residential scheme formerly known as Lightbox at MediaCityUK. This is being delivered for Peel L&P and Legal & General Capital, and has been funded by Atlas Residential and IP Investment Management.

The contractor also secured a spot on the North West Construction Hub’s £1.5bn high value framework, having been picked for two lots covering projects between £15m and £35m, and projects worth more than £35m.

The merger of the offices does not mean the contractor will put out of the region altogether, with pre-construction services and business development for the North West to be based out of either London or Bristol. The company’s office at One Didsbury Point will continue to be used by its Energies & Services business.

A spokesperson for Bouygues UK said: “Owing to a challenging construction market in the North and Midlands, we have decided to merge the Manchester and Birmingham operations of Bouygues UK with our offices in the South West and Wales.

“This will happen over time and existing projects in the Midlands and North West will continue unaffected through to completion. Future business development and pre-construction support to the North and Midlands will be provided from our Bristol and London offices and we will continue to target selected projects in these regions with repeat customers where we can add value.

“We are consulting with staff affected and will look to redeploy them to other roles where possible. Other Bouygues Group companies based in the North and Midlands are unaffected by this decision and will continue to operate as normal; this includes the Bouygues Energies & Services Manchester office.”

Bloated tier 1 struggles to cope with challenging market where relationships are the key as opposed to subdue bashing. No surprise there.
