Work has started on the construction of two hotels at Airport City, after Beijing Construction Engineering Group International won the contract earlier this month.
BCEGI is a joint venture partner with Manchester Airports Group and the Greater Manchester Pension Fund on the delivery of the wider £1bn Airport City masterplan, which will see the development of a large-scale mixed-use development featuring hotels, offices, retail and a logistics park .
Under the £45m contract, BCEGI will build the first two hotels of the masterplan – a 280-bedroom Holiday Inn and 262-bedroom Ibis Budget, which are due to complete and open in early 2022.
Faithful+Gould is the quantity surveyor and employer agent for the two hotels.
As Place North West reported on 10 January, another planning application was submitted for a 412-bedroom hotel off Chicago Avenue, to be operated by French hospitality group Accor under its Tribe brand. The 134,000 sq ft, nine-storey scheme designed by Dexter Moren Associates is yet to be approved.
In total, the Airport City hotel district next to Manchester Airport’s transport interchange is expected to cost £250m, according to MAG.
The ground-breaking is the latest stage of the £1bn masterplan, which will also see the addition of a £6m bridge crossing over the M56, work for which began in October last year.
Contractor Winvic is on site with the first phase of The Hut Group’s £150m logistics park, Icon, developed by Stoford and TPD Real Estate, after breaking ground on the scheme last June. The park includes 168,000 sq ft of logistics space, together with 104,000 sq ft of offices over four floors. The scheme is expected to house 2,000 staff when it completes in the fourth quarter of this year.
The Hut Group also plans to start on its 280,000 sq ft global headquarters to be located to the north of Airport City this year.
