Approval for Oldham’s Egyptian Room
The local council has granted consent to develop the town centre food hall, which is scheduled to open by this Christmas.
The venue, named The Egyptian Room, is to feature independent food and drink stalls under the plans unveiled by Oldham Council last summer.
It will be located within the council’s former civic headquarters at the grade two-listed Old Town Hall, which is being regenerated through a £37m scheme that has already seen a seven-screen Odeon cinema open in 2017, and other leisure occupiers planning to open, including Nando’s and Molino Lounge.
With planning consent now in place, refurbishment work for the Egyptian Room site is to commence in June, according to the council.
The venue will comprise six casual dining-style food and drink concessions and a central dining space capable of accommodating 200 people. It will offer both indoor and outdoor seating including an al-fresco dining area on Parliament Square.
The council is in talks to appoint a single operator to run the food court with the concessions then granted to independent outlets.
Cllr Sean Fielding, leader of Oldham Council and cabinet member for economy and skills, said: “The Egyptian Room will be another fantastic addition to Oldham town centre and will sit perfectly alongside our redeveloped Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre and Tommyfield Market.
“It’s great news and something else for us to look forward to. With many businesses soon to reopen and lots of exciting new additions coming to the town centre, there’s a real buzz about Oldham and its future is looking bright.”
The council has submitted a £10.7m bid to the Government’s Future High Street Fund to support the delivery of the Old Town Hall redevelopment and other town centre projects.
