Ambleside Sainsbury’s approved

The Lake District National Park Authority has approved plans for a 14,000 sq ft Sainsbury's foodstore on a 2.2-acre site close to the centre of Ambleside.

Acting on behalf of Maple Grove Developments, HOW Planning negotiated permission for the scheme, which will deliver a new foodstore with undercroft car parking, landscaping and public realm. The site is adjacent to Hayes Garden World and was formerly a display area for the garden centre.

Daniel Brown, principal planner at HOW Planning, said: "We worked hard to convince the Local Authority of the merits of our planning case and look forward to seeing this important site being redeveloped. The scheme has received strong public support and the site represents the only real opportunity to expand and enhance the food retail offer of Ambleside so that 'weekly' shopping needs can be met locally."

Hadfield Cawkwell Davidson acted as architect on the project.

Premier Inn in lakes, now Sainsbury, McDonalds next? We go to these places to get away from the ‘big boys’

By Mary Smiley

Do we? I personally go for the scenery and environment. Also, I think the point is that there is a need to serve the people who live there locally.

Yes we do! And the scenery which goes without mention! Oh yes manc boi – as they couldnt survive before Sainsbury arrived thanks for pointing that out?

Yes we do go there to get away from them Manc boi! However did the locals survive before? Take it you are on the tills at J Sainsbury and Co?

You can choose to not shop at Sainsbury’s any day you like if it really is a negative in your life. Why not support local shops instead?

Because, overall, its easier and better going to a chain (sadly). Its not like you have no choice at home. Why should the people who live there not have access to the benefits the rest of us are apparently hooked on?

I’m not a fan of homogenization of high streets or grocery options, and there is something that sad about seeing a typical white shed store on your holidays. But I’m also a realist and I recognise the benefits of these places, and in fact the real depressing thing about seeing chain stores on your holiday is the bland architecture that looks identical to your local out-of-town. At least this design looks to have something about it.

Thank God for the planners making the right decision. The other food stores in Ambleside are terrible (speaking as a former resident) and this is just what Ambleside needs! It will cut down on the number of people travelling to Windermere / Kendal for their shopping. Plus Hayes had neglected that part of their grounds for years so this will improve the site.
