£165m to improve access to Manchester Airport

Major Government funding was announced by Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon for new road links to Manchester International Airport, the UK's fourth largest airport with 21 million passengers a year.

The funding announced today would allow new sections of road to be built between the M56 Manchester Airport Spur and the A555; and between the A555 and the A6 at Hazel Grove, if local and regional partners also commit to the scheme. These are parts of the original 'SEMMMS' or South East Manchester Relief road scheme.

Hoon said: "Making this funding available for new road links around Manchester Airport reflects our commitment to support economic growth in the UK.

"The proposed link between the airport and the A6 to the east will help airport employees, passengers travelling to the airport from South East Manchester and from further afield, other long-distance traffic on the M60 and M56 and the wider local community."
