Merseyside Fire firms up Aintree ‘super-station’ intentions

Ryder Architecture is behind the designs for the 53,000 sq ft complex off Long Lane, with Wates lined up to build it.

The Long Lane development, which has been dubbed a ‘super-station’ by Merseyside Fire and Rescue, would comprise a four-bay fire station, and a four-storey training tower.

Additional facilities at the Aintree complex include a six-storey tactical training building and a two-storey hazardous materials and urban search and rescue training area.

The facility would provide the central location for the provision of operational training to front line firefighting crews across Merseyside.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue has submitted a planning application to Liverpool City Council for the scheme.

If plans for the Long Lane project go ahead, two existing fire stations in Aintree and Croxteth would close.

The Aintree site opened in 1926 and the Croxteth station has been operational since the 1960s.

If this improves the service in the area then fair enough, and they will look to sell off the land/buildings from both Aintree and Croxteth fire stations, however I think the Aintree fire station building has some architectural merit and at least the frontage should be saved in a similar way to Allerton fire station.
