Manchester Building Society to open first branch

Members will be able to bank in person once a city centre hub opens at Beaconsfield Estate’s 74 King Street.

Manchester Building Society, which currently has no bricks-and-mortar presence in the city, has agreed to occupy the entire 5,700 sq ft grade two-listed building.

Previously home to an outlet fashion brand Diesel, the building on the corner of King Street and Cross Street has been vacant since earlier this year.

The building requires a full internal strip-out and refurbishment to transform it into the building society’s main branch.

As well as the ground floor customer facilities, the first floor will accommodate offices and the basement will feature meeting rooms.

MWE Architects is advising on the proposals.

Manchester Building Society was established in 1922 and has 11,000 members.

A spokesperson for Newcastle Building Society, which acquired Manchester Building Society in 2023, said: “Newcastle Building Society confirms it has taken on the lease for the King Street property and will be announcing exciting plans for the building in the new year.”

As a member who likes to visit a branch this is good news.

This is great to see along with the only remaining truly local building society (Vernon) refurbishing all local branches it’s great to see mutuals taking steps to support all members and local communities rather than closing branches.

Hopefully they will expand the branch network – similar to Newcastle Building Society opening new branches in North East England. With Cheshire Building Society being part of Nationwide, there is an opportunity to grow from Manchester into Cheshire to open new branches and expand the brand

Heading is rather misleading as it closed its branches for some time. Perhaps it should say “Manchester Building Society returns with a new branch”
