Greater Manchester to win new city region powers

Communities Secretary Hazel Blears will name the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities among the first half-dozen city region groups to gain new spending powers.

The announcement, which could come as early as today, will confirm the widely expected approval of multi-area agreements for Greater Manchester, along with Leeds, Newcastle, Southampton and Portsmouth, Sheffield and Bournemouth.

The MAA deals enable metropolitan areas to pool funding streams into one source to spend on city-regional priorities.

Liverpool city region is expected to miss out on this first round but will be in with a chance when the next batch is named in the autumn.
