Grants for social housing cycle storage

Transport for Greater Manchester is offering grants of up to £10,000 to social landlords to cover the cost of secure cycle parking for tenants.

The grant can be used to install cycle stands, shelters or wall mounted storage, as well as upgrade existing cycling facilities to include improved lighting, CCTV coverage or security.

The initiative is part of TfGM's Better by Cycle programme, which aims to increase cycling to make up 10% of all journeys by 2025. Around £45m is being invested in improvements to cycle routes and facilities across Greater Manchester, alongside a wide-ranging programme of information, education and training.

The cycle storage grants are being funded through the government's Local Sustainable Transport Fund, which targets congestion, reduces carbon emissions and helps people back into work.

Cllr Chris Paul, member and cycling champion of the TfGM committee, said: "Not having somewhere to safely and conveniently store your bike at home can be a real hindrance to many people who might otherwise cycle.

"These grants stand to benefit a significant amount of Greater Manchester's residents and I encourage all eligible landlords to work with their tenants to see what cycling storage options might work best for them."

The closing date for applications is Friday 3 October 2014 with grants being issued on a first come first served basis.

A network of cycle hubs is also being provided at key locations and district centres across Greater Manchester to make secure cycle parking more widely available. To find out more about cycling in Greater Manchester visit
