GMPTE tenders for 900 Metrolink shelters

Two tenders have been published by Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive for the procurement of new shelters on the Metrolink extension.

The first is for the supply and installation of between 200 and 250 passenger shelters with the possibility of a further 700 for later phases. This contract will run for an initial six years.

The second tender covers maintenance and the potential to sell advertising space on new and existing shelters when the current contracts expire. This contract will run for between 15 and 20 years.

Companies interested in the tenders have until Christmas Eve to request further documents.

The tenders are the latest in the emerging programme to build the Metrolink extensions to Rochdale/Oldham, Droylsden and Chorlton.

MPact-Thales, a consortium made up of Laing O'Rourke, Grant Rail and Thales was appointed to deliver the new lines. The three-year build contract is worth £360m to MPact-Thales, with roughly £200m of that expected to go to subcontractors. Work is due to start on the first of the three new lines, into Chorlton, South Manchester in March 2009. The last of the three will open in spring 2012.
