Fresh wave of HMRC withdrawals targets smaller towns
HM Revenue & Customs is bringing more vacant office space to the market two months after saying it would halve the number of buildings its occupies.
In March, HMRC unveiled cost-cutting plans to vacate 20 buildings and retain 22 in larger towns and cities across the North West.
Today, under the next stage of its Regional Review Programme, staff consultations on accommodation requirements were launched in the following locations:
- Burnley and Nelson
- Crewe, Macclesfield and Northwich
- Warrington
- Wigan
- Barrow-In-Furness
- Carlisle
- Kendal
- Lancaster
- Penrith
- Whitehaven
Mary Hay, HMRC director responsible for the programme, said: "By consolidating work in fewer locations HMRC will be able to work more efficiently and so improve customer service as well as providing better value for money. "
HMRC currently occupies 15 office buildings in these combined locations, housing around 800 staff.
The consultation will last for eight weeks and is due to close on 6 August 2008.
