Crumpsall school given green light for £20m rebuild

A development agreement has been signed between Manchester City Council and King David Schools in Crumpsall, giving the school the green light for work to commence on its £20m redevelopment.

Manchester City Council leader, Sir Richard Leese, joined the King David Schools chair of Trustees, Joshua Rowe, and the chair of Governors of the constituent Schools, to sign the development agreement.

Sir Jonathan Sacks, who was paying a pastoral visit to the school, also joined the signing ceremony.

Work begins this week at the Eaton Road site, which is currently home to the 800-place high school and sixth form, as well as a junior and infant school and nursery.

Pupils will relocate to the new school during the winter of 2010, with the overall scheme completing in July 2011.

The new 80,000 sq ft building will house a 420-place primary school, a 60-place nursery and the majority of the high school. The remainder of the high school accommodation will be provided in the existing sixth form, administration and music blocks.

The project will create and promote local job and training opportunities at all levels with the city council assisting main contractor Laing O'Rourke to recruit and train apprentices and work in partnership with the Manchester Internships scheme for young people, as part of the Council's Building Schools for the Future programme and Primary Capital Programme.

Jonathan Dover and Howard Cornes assisted the school on behalf of Hill Dickinson.
