Berry: I can’t wait to join forces with Andy
Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry made his first official visit to Manchester yesterday to meet with Mayor Andy Burnham, pledging to work closely with Burnham and put aside political differences.
The pair met at the Museum of Science & Industry, where the previous Conservative government first made its pledge to boost the Northern economy using the Northern Powerhouse phrase.
The Minister and the Mayor discussed the city’s £7bn devolution deal, while Berry also visited the Ordsall Chord rail link which is under construction.
Both have worked together previously on North West issues, while Burnham was Labour MP for Leigh in Greater Manchester. Berry has been MP for Rossendale & Darwen in Lancashire since 2010.
Berry said: “Building the Northern Powerhouse is a long-term government priority, and we’re providing over £7 billion for Greater Manchester to thrive.
“I’ve worked with Andy Burnham for years and he has an excellent track record of supporting the people of Manchester.
“I can’t wait to join forces with Andy so we can build the Northern Powerhouse together.
“The Ordsall Chord is a great example of the Northern Powerhouse in action – making it easier for people to travel across Manchester, with fast, frequent links throughout the city.
“It’s vital that one of the country’s largest cities, with a whopping 98 train stations, has the improved connectivity that it deserves.
“That’s why I’m determined to work with Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, on his ambitious proposals to improve rail across the region.”
