Barnes to build Blackburn bus station
Barnes Group has won a £1.5m contract from Blackburn with Darwen Council to build the new £4.5m bus station in Blackburn, Lancashire.
The bus station will be 11,800 sq ft including ancillary accommodation. Barnes Group will also be undertaking the wider landscaping of the two-acre site around the scheme.
The 40-week project is due to start on site in March. The facility is to be built on part of the town centre's old market site on Ainsworth Street and will contain 14 bus stands and three layover facilities.
The bus station has been designed by Capita Symonds, the firm behind major projects nationwide including the £188m Library of Birmingham, the BBC buildings at MediaCityUK, and the extension of the British Library.
Funds for the development are from the £40m Pennine Reach programme, which is aimed at improving public transport between Blackburn and Accrington.
