Aldi on the move in Rhyl with Marina Quay deal
Scarborough International Properties has agreed a deal with the discount supermarket chain at its £25m Marina Quay development on the Rhyl seafront.
Aldi will take 18,567 sq ft at the 132,000 sq ft retail and leisure development in a relocation and expansion from its site on Wellington Road in the town centre.
Pre-lets have been secured with The Range, Poundworld, Farmfoods and Greggs at the scheme on the town’s former funfair site, with The Range currently fitting its 35,000 sq ft anchor store out. Poundworld opened its 4,700 sq ft shop this summer.
Scarborough said that further deals with food and beverage operators are soon to be announced. Phase two of the scheme is expected to complete next year.
The developer added that Marina Quay will generate around 500 jobs, and said that it is working with the local council and JobCentre Plus to ensure employment opportunities are accessible to local residents.
Jack Abou-Jaoude, development manager of Scarborough International Properties, said: “We are delighted to have been able to work with Aldi in providing a solution to their expanding presence in Rhyl. Our retail and leisure scheme will provide shops to meet the needs of the growing population of Rhyl and surrounds.”
The deal with Scarborough reflects a trend by discount grocers to move up the chain from the smaller format stores with which they first made inroads into the UK market, as seen in Old Trafford this month.
