Interserve hands over Christie teenage treatment centre
Interserve Construction has completed a £12m cancer treatment centre on behalf of The Christie in Manchester.
Opening to patients in June, the centre will house The Christie's teenage and young adult services, haematology and transplant services.
The three-storey building includes outpatient facilities, 31 specialist inpatient rooms, recreational facilities for young people including a gym, music room and relaxation area, as well as rehabilitation, support services and relatives accommodation.
The architect on the scheme was IBI Taylor Young, with Capita as cost consultants, URS as structural engineers, and MACE project managing.
In April, Interserve Construction won a further contract with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust to design and construct a UK high energy Proton Beam Therapy facility. Proton Beam Therapy is a specialist form of radiotherapy which can precisely target certain cancers, improving patient outcomes and reducing side-effects. Christie's was awarded part of a £250m fund established by the Department of Health in April 2012 to develop proton beam therapy services in London and Manchester. Subject to approval, construction work is planned to start on site in 2016, completing in 2018.
