Wind turbines proposed for Haverigg prison
Seven wind turbines are being proposed for Cumbria's Haverigg Prison to make it self-sufficient in energy.
If successful, 270ft high turbines could be in operation by early 2012 which would also generate enough electricity for an additional 3,000 homes.
Details of the proposed scheme were unveiled by officials from the National Offender Management Service and Partnerships for Renewables.
The site being investigated is next to both HMP Haverigg and the existing Haverigg windfarm.
The plans are for seven 850 kilowatt wind turbines, similar in size to some of the existing Haverigg wind turbines.
The first public exhibition on the proposals is expected before the end of the year.
waste of space if you ask me. makes councils feel good but generates diddly squat

Great idea. There are already wind turbines here so to add a few more makes sense, particularly if it means that running the prison, a cost to the taxpayer, becomes cheaper.
