Network Rail picks Morgan Sindall for office
Morgan Sindall has won a £15.9m contract to build Network Rail's North West operating centre in Gorton, Manchester.
The new 25,700 sq ft office, designed by Aedas, will provide a base from which all of Network Rail's operations in the region will be run and will accommodate its personnel and control equipment.
Network Rail's new base will be built on a site at the end of Ashton Old Road near to the junction with the Mancunian Way.
The three-storey, steel-framed building is designed to achieve a BREEAM 'very good' rating and is due to be completed by December 2013.
The building will feature a 'green roof' planted with sedum vegetation to absorb rainwater and provide insulation.
Morgan Sindall will employ around 110 people on site at the peak of construction, including a number of specialist contractors.
James Morgan, area director of Morgan Sindall, said: "We are delighted to have won this significant contract which is a testament to the combined expertise of our Rail and Construction teams.
"Our collaborative and full building information modelling level two approach will deliver a bespoke solution to Network Rail and provide them with a state-of-the-art home for many years to come."
The contract is the latest in a string of rail projects which Morgan Sindall has been appointed to this year. Schemes include an £8m contract to refurbish the platforms of Liverpool's underground stations, a circa £9m project to install a system to cool the platform areas at Green Park Tube Station and a £13m project to extend and enhance Centro's Wednesbury depot in preparation for the arrival of a new fleet of trams.
