Bids sought for Alty market transformation
Trafford Council is seeking bids for the "operation, management and transformation" of Altrincham Market.
It follows a report to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority suggesting that Altrincham should develop a role as a modern market town, attracting visitors from Cheshire so it can thrive alongside the Trafford Centre.
The report was part of an investigation into ways to revitalise eight town centres: Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport and Wigan.
Altrincham has been a charter market since 1290.
A blueprint was drawn up last year by Altrincham Forward to regenerate the market quarter and make the town centre more welcoming.
The Altrincham Forward group – made up of council, business and community leaders – says the proposals will deliver a refurbished marketplace, pedestrian friendly streets and a new, purpose-built home for Altrincham Library.
Trafford Council joined forces with Hale-based developer Citybranch on the £15m scheme.
A tender document states: "Trafford Council invites tenders from individuals or organisations interested in the operation, management and transformation of Altrincham Market.
"Whilst experience of market management and operation is anticipated, the council will consider proposals from individuals or organisations with other complementary experience.
"Experience should demonstrate initiative and new ways of thinking, together with a successful track record in commercial/regeneration activities."
