You are cordially invited to attend a special free Manchester Event to celebrate the launch of a new book entitled ‘Virtual Futures for Design, Construction and Procurement’ on Wednesday, 8th October 2008 at CUBE. This event has been organised immediately after the London launch and includes the same international speakers and provides an opportunity to hear some of the leading specialists in the field. The developments in Information and Communication Technologies will impact on us all for many years to come. The Design and Construction industries are no exception and this event explores some of the ideas for the future including advanced information models, virtual prototyping, design optimisation and other features of the computer based future. Where is it leading and how can we respond to the demands of clients for a step change in the performance of design teams and the finished product? Two major current schemes will be presented by leading exponents of building information models. Firstly Martin Simpson of Arup Sports who will outline the technology used on the ‘Birds Nest’ Olympic Stadium in Beijing and secondly Martin Riese of Gehry Technologies will describe the Hong Kong Swire Properties Limited One Island East office tower project. The BIM modelling process associated with this building won the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Building Information Modeling award for design / process delivery innovation in 2008. These projects are at the leading edge of current BIM practice across the globe and the Hong Kong clients claim substantial savings due to reduced waste in the process. The BIM process has now also been adopted by the contractors for all their projects to provide them with competitive advantage in the future. In addition, Professor Brandon and Doctor Tuba Kocaturk will present some of the ideas for a virtual future beyond what is available now. These internationally leading speakers (and Editors of the book) will describe what the future might hold for all those involved with the property and construction industry. It includes new design possibilities in free form architecture, visual simulation of the construction process, manufacturing direct from the building model, optimisation of design of structures and even 3D printing of a building in concrete! Registration If you want to know what the future might hold then this is the event for you. The presentations will start promptly at 12.30pm and finish at 2.00pm with the opportunity for questions. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. Please contact Ms Hanneke van Dijk to reserve a place (email: h.vandijk@salford.ac.uk Tel +44 (0)161 298 5164) Anyone wishing to purchase the book, which contains chapters by over twenty of the world’s leading thinkers in this field, can do so at a substantial discount. The organisers are grateful for the help and support provided by the RICS Foundation in sponsoring the event.
