Oscar Wilde's view of a cynic as a man who "knows the price of everything and the value of nothing" sums up the architects' commonly cynical view of Project Management.

This subject touches a raw nerve with architects: as late comers to the building industry the PM is often suspected by architects of interfering too much and adding little – but the project manager sees his role as facilitating rather than interfering with the creative tension between client and architect.

"Project managers as a breed have not always has a good press, and too often the question has been asked "but what do they do?". Clive Birch co-founder of Buro 4 believes that what they do is add value, but if that sounds too anodyne, he makes it clear that to him that this means ensuring that the client saves or makes an additional amount of money that is at least equal to …..the fee. Either you consider yourself as a project manager or perhaps you are being nosed out by one – understanding each other's roles and responsibilities is crucial to achieving a successful outcome.

Speaker: Clive Birch BSc (Hons) FRIBA. Clive was one of the four founders of Project Management company, Buro Four.

In the 25 years of Buro Four he has worked with a number of highly regarded UK designers including Bennetts Associates, Wilkinson Eyre, Richard Rogers and Partners, Rogers Stirk and Harbour, Grimshaws and Fletcher Priest and Penoyre and Prasad on projects such as the new Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Stock Exchange, the new city academies programme and Vodafone's new World Headquarters in Newbury.

Clive strongly believes that good project management can help the delivery of better buildings. He is a Director of the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology, a CABE Enabler and Trustee of the British Council for School Environments.
