Slater Heelis Law’s next In Conversation with…  guest is Paul Dennett, the working-class boy from Warrington who became Salford’s second directly elected City Mayor in May 2016.

His upbringing, where money was tight and the stress of debt a constant factor, has influenced his politics and he developed a lifelong appreciation for the public sector – healthcare, education and the ‘blue light’ services.

As a teenager he helped out in his parents’ pub, changing barrels, lugging crates and talking to the regulars before a spell in the customer services department of a BT call centre. He studied at the University of Ulster and before completing his degree in Manchester and then went on to lecture at Manchester Metropolitan Business School.

He lives in Salford and was a local councillor for the Langworthy Ward before being elected City Mayor in which role he has overall responsibility for the delivery of all council services and the budget.

He is also tasked with developing strong working relationships with partners across the city including community groups, the voluntary sector and business and industry.

He recently sanctioned significant council investment in two private sector office developments and made a 24-hour trip to MIPIM to launch The Crescent, the joint, city council and University of Salford masterplan opportunity.

His interests include cooking, visiting the galleries in Salford and Manchester and travelling when possible – though preferably not by plane..!

Paul will be in conversation with Chris Maguire and like all our previous conversations this is an opportunity to make your own mind up about the person behind the headlines.
