This workshop is the first in a series that will be delivered by Places Matter Design Review, in partnership with the Design Network. They are part of a programme of training events across England being supported by MHCLG Innovation Funding.

Councillors have a major role in the delivery of high quality, well designed places, from the adoption of public policy; the steering and decision making on new development through the planning system; to influencing the quality of place – both buildings and public space – through procurement and delivery.

These workshops will help to provide urban design knowledge for councillors and show how planning and design fit together. They will consider what makes a successful place and how it can be well designed: providing the homes, local facilities and amenities we need. By sharing experiences of what works in planning and development, and where things might go wrong, we aim to provide the foundations to help elected members make more robust decisions and create better places for all.
