Wyre sets out Poulton vision

The council is seeking feedback on its plans for improvements to the town centre, including an enhanced public realm and transport links.

Design consultant Arcadis is working with Wyre Council om its proposals for Poulton town centre.

According to a council report, it is hoped that proposals will see Poulton offer a “contemporary shopping experience” to become a “prosperous market town”.

Proposals start with public realm improvements to Blackpool Old Road, Ball Street, and Chapel Street. Plans seek to provide better signage to improve navigation around the town centre, as well as street furniture engraved with local history to bring a sense of heritage.

Transport links would be improved under the local authority’s plans with the development of the Poulton-to-Fleetwood rail line.

More electric vehicle charging would be delivered, as well as upgraded cycling and walking routes.

Cottam Hall Playing Field would also be developed to provide local residents with better sports facilities and pitches to support the Wyre Moving More initiative, which seeks to improve sports and leisure facilities to increase physical activity across the borough. Plans for the field include new or updated pavilion facilities, installing outdoor gym equipment, and a new circular track for walking and cycling.

Following public comments, a Town Centre Regeneration Framework Report will be produced later this year.

The consultation ends on Monday 19 June and can be accessed at wyre.gov.uk.

All very well, but people won’t come to Poulton for street furniture and signage. Get us back to when we had two shoeshops, a book shop, two jewellers, multiple ladies shops. You used to be able to spend a whole afternoon in Poulton browsing and spending.
