Wrexham attraction cues up 15,000 sq ft expansion

The Xplore Science Discovery Centre is looking for funding support to help realise the vision for seven new learning zones.

The Xplore project is intended to inspire and entertain visitors of all ages, with activities based around the STEAM subjects of science, technology, engineering, arts and maths.

Architect Cassidy + Ashton has designed the redevelopment, which will be carried out in phases. ECS Consultants is advising on M&E.

Professor Joe Yates, vice-chancellor and chief executive of Wrexham University, said: “Xplore! 2.0 represents an exciting step forward for both Wrexham and the broader region.

“The centre’s commitment to inspiring the next generation of STEAM professionals aligns perfectly with our goals at Wrexham University. By fostering creativity, innovation, and critical thinking, Xplore! is not only enriching the local community but also creating valuable opportunities for students and young people to explore and develop skills for the future.”

Xplore!’s seven new areas will include an immersive planetarium, an illusion zone, a water zone, a space-themed zone designed for under-7s, and an exhibition based on them ind.

There will also be a versatile conferencing and events space; and a ‘maker space’.

The redevelopment will rely on a combination of public and private investment. There is some backing in place from a UK Shared Prosperity Fund allocation, along with commitments from local businesses and stakeholders.

The UKSPF backing has funded market research, a feasibility study and visitor survey, which have combined to shape the agenda for the redevelopment project.

Xplore!’s current exhibition remains open while the project comes together.

The centre is operated by North Wales Science Ltd, a registered educational charity that has been in operation for 20 years, previously trading under Techniquest@NEWI and then Techniquest Glyndŵr, and presently as Xplore! Science Discovery Centre.
