Wirral’s Hind Street rebrands to Borough Yard
Partners ION Developments, Picture This, and Wirral Council have renamed the 1,500-neighbourhood to reflect the site’s heritage as a former railway sidings and gasworks.
Sisk has already begun two-year preparatory works at the site of the 65-acre Borough Yard, which will bring a park and 650,000 sq ft of commercial space to Birkenhead.
Formally known as Hind Street, Borough Yard is found between Birkenhead Central and Green Lane train stations.
The next 15 years of development will provide new roads, active travel links, the start of the Dock Branch Park project, and the eventual removal of adjacent flyovers to create pedestrian-friendly links to the town centre.
The scheme has secured combined funding of £52m from Homes England and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.
Steve Parry, managing director at ION Developments, said: “As we move forward with the Hind Street plans, it is important that we give the development an identity that will tie it into the fabric of the area and attract people at various stages of life to want to move in and build a life here.
“Borough Yard will be a dynamic and varied mix of houses and apartments to meet a range of needs, connected by well-designed paths, new streets, green spaces, and communal areas, where people feel safe and better connected, both to each other and to the wider city region.”

In February, Picture This formed a strategic partnership with ION Developments for the Birkenhead project. Picture This will advise on design, phasing, funding, and marketing.
Shannon Conway, co-founder of Picture This, said: “We want people to know that Borough Yard is not just another housing development. This will be a neighbourhood which will work hard to benefit the whole community, not just those who will eventually be living and working within it.
“We’ll be working hard to get that message out, through actions as well as words.”
Cllr Paula Basnett, Leader of Wirral Council, added: “This is another positive step forward in a transformational project for Birkenhead town centre.
“As work continues on site and ION and Picture This begin to take the development to market, defining what our new urban neighbourhood will look and feel like – and how it will benefit not just those who live there in the future but also the wider town – is an important part of bringing Borough Yard to life, helping to build excitement and a sense of community over the coming years as work moves forward.”
Masterplanner BDP is also the scheme’s architect – Curtins, Planit, and WSP assisted with the application.

This is what Birkenhead needs to stop it’s downward trajectory, some of the housing built over previous decades is so bland and unsuitable especially near Hamilton Square. Another area that needs an upgrade is at Woodside, so much potential there right on the waterfront and near the train station, of course things aren’t helping with the repairs to the ferry landing stage which has been out of action now for over 2 years.

The very name is surely off putting. Calling the area a Yard reminds me of a scrap yard, not a place of beauty or of pleasant surroundings. This is not a name to attract people in my opinion.
