Wire plots Southern Gateway bus depot
A planning application has been submitted for the construction of a bus depot on Dallam Lane in Warrington, set to replace the existing operation on Wilderspool Causeway.
The move will enable council-owned bus company Own Buses to expand its fleet and recruit more drivers and technical staff. The depot, designed by Janus Architects, will have room for twenty further buses, taking the fleet to 140.
The applicant, Wire Regeneration, is a joint venture between Warrington Council and developer Langtree, tasked with delivering the regeneration of the town’s Southern Gateway.
Ben Wakerley, Warrington’s Own Buses managing director, said: “This is a vital next step in ensuring the town has the most efficient and technically-advanced fleet possible. It will enable us to improve conditions for our hard-working colleagues and ensure that we can continue to improve the service for our passengers.”
The first project in the wider masterplan, the construction of 160 homes on the site of Warrington RLFC’s former Wilderspool stadium, was recently granted planning permission.
Once the depot is relocated, the former site would be used to bring forward civic space and further homes.
The new depot is planned to be complete and operational by summer 2021. Spawforths is the planner for the project, while Cundalls provided M&E advice, Marston & Grundy are civil & structural engineers, and Curtins transport consultants.
Misleading headline!. New depot is on Dallam Lane which is definitely North of Warrington. The ‘Southern Gateway’ element is actually new housing being built where the current depot is, a location that’s already on one of the busiest road junctions in the town and with no new infrastructure to support the 300 new houses planned
