Wigan pushes forward with estate masterplan
A public consultation into the future of the Worsley Mesnes estate is underway, where landscape architect and masterplanner Gillespies has presented a regeneration masterplan and delivery strategy for Wigan Council.
The plan includes 278 new homes, along with the remodelling of the 1960s streets, a new hub development comprising shops, community space and neighbourhood square, and 18.5 acres of improved green space – health professionals have been involved in consultation as the area has twice the national average of people with bad or very bad health. Cushman & Wakefield has supported Gillespies on the project.
Wigan Council has been carrying out house improvements and targeted demolitions in recent years and is considering funding options from central government, following the announcement in December 2016 that up to £172m is available to regenerate deprived estates across the UK.
Cllr David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We have a long-term ambition to improve the Worsley Mesnes area for residents with significant regeneration investment.
“The views of residents and other groups and organisations within the local community form a vital part in getting the regeneration of the estate right. We hope they take the time to look at the masterplan and contribute to the improvement of their area and help the plan progress.”
