Wigan leisure centre tops out

Contractor Warden Construction has reached the topping-out stage of Ashton Leisure Centre’s expansion, Wigan Council has announced.

The £2.8m scheme in Ashton-in-Makerfield will include an 80-station gym, group exercise studio and indoor cycling studio, along with a sauna and steam rooms and additional changing facilities.

A synthetic pitch and multi-use games area will also be installed to enable group and community bookings at the site which is managed by Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles on behalf of Wigan Council.

This is the fourth leisure centre to receive an upgrade as part of the Deal for Health and Wellness which has seen Wigan Council invest £6m.

Wigan Council’s lead member for leisure, Cllr Jim Moodie said: “Work is progressing very well and we are grateful to Warden Construction and Inspiring healthy lifestyles for managing the project so well.

“Ashton Leisure Centre is an exciting project for residents and the improvements will continue to benefit the health of local people in-line with the Deal for Health and Wellness.”

The project is scheduled to be fully completed by spring  2018.
